I finally saw Aladdin last weekend, and I had some reservations before seeing it, but it fell more on the positive side for me. I knew no one could replace Robin Williams as the Genie, and Will Smith gave it his own spin.
Aladdin Movie Review:
This live action version of Aladdin had spot-on casting for Aladdin and Jasmine, while making some minor changes to other characters. Will Smith as the Genie was basically…. Will Smith but blue (sometimes). If you like Will Smith, then you would be pleased with his interpretation of the classic Robin Williams character.

Will Smith referenced some of the iconic moments from the animated version, while making the character his own. The songs were sung in a Will Smith fashion, making them slightly more hip-hop. It was not my favorite choice, but I did appreciate the effort.

The rest of the movie was beautiful, with gorgeous scenery and stunning costumes. There was even a fun dance scene that was slightly silly, but mostly very cool. Some interesting choices were made with the storyline, such as making Jasmine wanting to be Sultan herself, and Jafar being more soft-spoken and not appearing as the old man in the jail. The cave scene was underwhelming, and the end scene did not include the giant serpent and hour-glass like the original. Instead, Jafar makes Iago giant sized and they have a weird chase scene through the city.
All in all, I did like the movie, and it did turn out better than I was expecting. My expectations were low because I love the original so much, and no one can replace Robin Williams. And honestly, they still can’t.
Final score: 7.5/10
