Princess Switch: Netflix Original

If you love cheesy Christmas movies a la Hallmark, The Parent Trap, and The Princess Diaries, I highly recommend Netflix’s newest Christmas movie, The Princess Switch.

Vanessa Hudgens stars as Stacy, the American baker, and Margaret, the British Duchess from fictional Montenaro.

This movie combines just about every cheesy rom-com cliche, but the Christmas theming and heartwarming romance make it worth the watch for any die-hard Hallmark Christmas movie fan.

The Princess Switch Plot

The movie follows Stacy, a baker from Chicago, as she travels with her best friend, Kevin, and his daughter, Olivia, to Belgravia for a royal baking contest at Christmas. While there, she bumps into the Duchess of Montenaro, Margaret, who happens to look identical to her.

The Duchess wants to be normal for a few days, so she asks Stacy to swap places with her before the big baking contest. Stacy agrees, and the girls spend a few hours learning how to be each other, under the watchful eyes of Margaret’s assistant.

Once switched, Kevin and Margaret spend a few days with Olivia, who quickly learns the secret, and they begin to fall for each other.

Stacy is left to deal with the prince, whom Margaret is engaged to as a duty to her country and her parents; the pair spend the weekend together and also begin to fall for each other over charity work and shared organizational preferences.

Stacy and Margaret swap back, but not before being secretly found out by the king and queen, who are supportive of their son loving a common American. There’s a big reveal scene, followed by a proposal and a wedding at the end.

This is a great feel good movie, with a lot of fun references to The Parent Trap, such as a secret handshake and one girl playing both an American and British role.

While the movie is certainly no Academy Award winner, it is nice to watch a wholesome Christmas movie that isn’t unbearable to watch and even featured some pretty decent talent.

What did you all think? Have you watched The Princess Switch yet?
