Mary Poppins Returns: Review

I went opening weekend to see the new Disney movie Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 classic Mary Poppins. Starring Emily Blunt as the legend herself, and featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack- a character related to Burt- the sequel upholds and stands on its own in the Mary Poppins legacy.

Mary Poppins Returns: Review and Spoilers

The movie takes place during the Great Slump, after Jane and Michael Banks have grown up. Michael’s wife has died, leaving him 3 young children to care for, and he is in danger of losing the family house- the same house the Banks children grew up in and Mary Poppins visited.

Mary Poppins flies in on a kite and comes to help the children who have grown up too quickly with the death of their mother, as well as help Michael remember what it was like to be a child.

Adventures ensue, and with Mary Poppins and Jack’s help, the kids, Jane, and Michael are able to save the house and begin to heal from their loss.

(Did you miss my review of Princess Switch? Catch it here!

This movie was absolutely phenomenal. I loved it so much. It was filled with magic; beautiful, witty, heartfelt, and music, dancing, and animation to die for.

Emily Blunt played Mary Poppins extremely well- I really felt that she was Mary Poppins. Lin Manuel-Miranda livens up the Jack role by reminding us of Dick Van Dyke’s Burt; he remembers Mary Poppins from his youth, and often waved to Jane Banks in her house when he was younger

The movie follows the same formula as the original, matching scenes and songs, but adding their own personal flair.

There is an animated scene, just like in the original, with a fun, silly song.

There’s a scene where they visit a cousin of Mary Poppins’, who is up on the ceiling; there’s a more subdued song when the children are in bed; and we get a lengthy song and dance number from the lamplighters of London who dance across light poles and perform bicycle tricks.

While nothing can beat the original Mary Poppins, this sequel falls right in line with worthy sequels, and would make any fan of the original happy.

I laughed; I cried; I spent more than half the movie with a huge smile on my face because it was all so magical.

There’s even an extra special cameo at the end from Angela Lansbury who really ends the movie on a sweet note.

I will definitely be purchasing it when it comes out on blu-ray, and plan on adding it to my regular rotation.

My score: 10/10 (Really 11/10)

Did any of you see it yet? What did you think? I’ve been keeping this soundtrack on repeat!
